When a cool room failure disrupted restaurant operations

Situation
A restaurant experienced a sudden failure of its commercial cool room.
The equipment was central to daily operations and the failure created an immediate risk of stock loss and business disruption.
The client arranged for a refrigeration technician to inspect the unit and submitted the repair information as part of the claim.
Why it was challenging
The initial repair documentation identified the damaged components and estimated repair cost, but did not clearly explain the cause of the failure.
For an equipment breakdown claim, the distinction between sudden mechanical damage, wear and tear and maintenance-related deterioration can be important.
The insurer therefore required additional technical information before completing its assessment.
The repair could not simply be considered on the cost of the invoice alone.
Wesure's role
Wesure reviewed the insurer's request and worked with the client to identify what information was missing.
We communicated with the refrigeration contractor and requested a clearer explanation of:
- the failed component
- the apparent cause of damage
- whether the failure was sudden
- the repairs required
- the condition of the equipment
We also helped coordinate the supporting documentation and maintained communication with the insurer while the additional information was being obtained.
Outcome
Once the technical evidence had been clarified and the supporting documents had been provided, the insurer completed its assessment and settled the covered portion of the claim.
The matter demonstrated that even where damage appears straightforward, the quality of the technical report can materially affect the progress of an equipment breakdown claim.
What others can learn
Businesses that rely on refrigeration or other critical equipment should:
- confirm whether equipment breakdown cover is included
- maintain regular servicing records
- retain purchase and repair documents
- obtain clear cause-of-damage reports
- notify claims promptly
- document stock and operational losses
A repair quotation explains the cost of repair.
A claims assessment may also require an explanation of why the equipment failed.
